Portrait of Margaret Chen

Margaret Chen

March 15, 1942 – September 2, 2024

Devoted mother, gifted teacher, and keeper of the best recipes.

A Life of Love and Curiosity

Margaret Chen spent sixty years making everyone around her feel seen. Born in Vancouver to a family of fishermen, she was the first in her family to attend university, graduating with a teaching degree in 1965. She spent thirty years shaping young minds at Eastside Elementary, where former students still call her "the teacher who believed in me."

Outside the classroom, Margaret was a tireless gardener, an adventurous cook, and the unofficial historian of her neighbourhood. She filled twelve journals with stories about the block she lived on for fifty years: the families who came and went, the little store that became a coffee shop, the elm tree that survived three storms. Those journals now live with her grandchildren.

She passed on a warm September morning with her daughter Linda by her side. Her smile, her soup dumplings, and her habit of writing notes in the margins of library books will be deeply missed.

She taught us that kindness, curiosity, and a good meal can make any day brighter.

Words from Those Who Loved Her

Memories shared for Margaret Chen.

Linda Chen Daughter

Mum kept a note in my lunchbox every day until I was eighteen. I found the last one folded inside her recipe book this week. I will carry her with me always.

David Okafor Former student

Mrs. Chen told me I could write when no one else did. Thirty years later, I teach because of her. Rest gently, my teacher.

Susan Alvarez Neighbour

For fifty years she waved to us from that garden. The whole street feels quieter now. Thank you for the tomatoes, the stories, and the kindness, Margaret.
